Pinewood Derby

Zander made a BYU Pinewood Derby Car this year--big shocker, right? Lol
We were on our own this year to make the car.  Living in Orangeville, we didn't have Grandpa Hughes' shop or his help.  Eek! Zander and I looked for and picked out a design, and then we got out our jigsaw and John went to work cutting it.  It didn't turn out perfect, but with some sanding, and some wood putty, we got it where we wanted it.  Zander was happy with it, so that was all that mattered to me!
Checking out all the other cars.  There were some fun ones this year!
Zander got his car all set and then raced to the end of the track to watch his car come down.

Zander was so excited that his car did so well.  He was not expecting it place at all, especially with the repair work we had to do once it was cut out.

His car won this round!
All the scouts in our troop. Back Row L to R: Damon DeLude, Tyson DeLude, Josh Brinkerhoff, Brian Rassmussen, Tanner Brown, Luke Seely, Mason Bell. Front Row L to R: Turner Stoker, Will Stilson, Braxton Butler, Christian Stoker, Zander Hughes, Devin Olsen.

Zander won the most unique car.

Zander ended up qualifying for the district pinewood derby in March.  He was beyond excited that he gets to race his car again! Great job, buddy!!

District Pinewood Derby

District Pinewood Derby was held in Moab with our stake on May 1st.  Zander was excited to go, but didn't think his car would do very well.  He went to district last year, and didn't win anything.

He was so excited when he beat out a few of the boys from other troops.

Zander and Easton from our ward took 1st and 2nd--what???  Neither of them expected to get very far.  Easton's family was laughing because they didn't spend any time putting his car together--it was kind of an afterthought, and then to have it win at District.  Way to go Green River!! :)

Our Green River boy scouts: Easton Thayn, Tyler Urqhart, and Zander.
Photo bomber Eli!!
Morgan had dress rehearsal for her dance recital, so Dad took the girls, and I took the boys with me.  Glad I got to spend some time with them being crazy!

Way to go, Zander--we are proud of you! :)

Pinewood Derby

Random picture of Ian with Dochia, and not a great one at that, but this was the first time he held her and she didn't cry! LOL
The Pinewood Derby was held on April 29th.  There were some fun activities for the kids to do while everyone was weighing in their cars.  They got to race little pull-back cars on a track against their friends.

Zander wanted flames on his car this year.  We even made one of the weights look like the driver of the car.  He thought that was pretty stinkin' cool.

After all was said and done, Zander came in second place!  He was thrilled!  This means he gets to go to Moab and race at District.  Wahoo!  Great job buddy! :)

Pinewood Derby

The Cub Scout Pinewood Derby was held on April 24, 2013.  I helped him look online for a car idea.  Unlike Ian, Zander wanted something that would go fast! :)
Grandpa Hughes helped us cut out his design, and then we painted it.  Zander did the blue and white and then informed me he wanted flames on the front.  I helped him add those to his car.  He was pretty happy with how it turned out!

Zander was entered as Wolf Car 3 out of 4.
After all the races, Zander came in 2nd place!  He was thrilled!

Zander getting his award and trophy.
Zander was so excited!  His trophy even lit up.

Because Zander placed 2nd at Ward level, he was automatically qualified for the Stake Pinewood Derby that was held on May 2nd in Moab.  I took Ian and Morgan with me to cheer Zander on.

While he didn't place at Stake (there were some serious die hards down there!).  He was still excited just to be able to go.  He got a candy car so that made the trip worth it, he said. :) So proud of you, buddy!  We sure do love you. :)

Pinewood Derby

Well, April 26th was the pinewood derby. Ian was, again, going for looks and not speed. (if you remember from John's blog, last year he made a hot dog in a bun) This year he decided he wanted to do a hummer limo. It turned out pretty cool. It didn't do very well, but he did win a couple of races, which he was excited about. I was impressed with how many of the kids chose to do unusual cars. You can see in the picture that we even had a spongebob car! I felt really bad for Ian because there were only 4 cars in his division, and he was the only one who didn't get a trophy. He said he didn't care, but I think he did. He said he'd rather have a bunch of cool cars, than win all the races. We'll see if he sticks to that line of thinking. He liked how his car turned out, and that's all that really matters. You're a winner to us, Ian! Keep being creative and having a positive attitude!
