So I saw an idea a while ago on The Idea Room's blog to make a fruit fly trap. With all the apples and garden produce sitting in the kitchen, fruit flys have become more of a problem than I want, so I thought I'd try my own trap. They are super easy to make. All you need is a mason jar, a piece of paper, scotch tape and bit of discarded fruit (I used an apple core). Make your paper into a funnel with a fairly small hole (don't want the flys getting back out), and secure with the tape. Place your fruit in the mason jar, then the funnel, and tape the funnel to the mouth of the jar so your flys don't escape that way either.
A few tips--make sure you tape the mouth of the jar well so when the kids come home from school they don't look at the flys, move the funnel and let the fruit flys back into your kitchen.
Also, don't let a child place some pomegranite seeds in through the funnel to add to the fruit as they will get stuck in the tiny hole, and ultimately making it a bigger hole by pushing them into the jar so the flys can also escape.
After about a day, take your jar outside and let the fruit flys go. You don't have to kill them, and they are no longer in your home!
Good luck!
That is a great idea. The fruit flies are HORRIBLE right now!! I think I will make one tomorrow. Got any ideas to keep fruit flies out of my car? Ya, me either. Justin is convinced it is the same fly, but I have seen more than one. Little buggers!! Thanks for sharing :)
